Galaxy & Cluster Biasing from Local Group Dynamics
نویسنده
چکیده
Comparing the gravitational acceleration induced on the Local Group of galaxies by different tracers of the underline density field we estimate, within the linear gravitational instability theory and the linear biasing ansatz, their relative bias factors. Using optical SSRS2 galaxies, IRAS (PSCz) galaxies and Abell/ACO clusters, we find bO,I ≈ 1.21 ± 0.06 and bC,I ≈ 4.3 ± 0.8, in agreement with other recent studies. Finally, there is an excellent one-to-one correspondence of the PSCz and Abell/ACO cluster dipole profiles, once the latter is rescaled by bC,I , out to at least ∼ 150 h −1 Mpc.

The Local Extragalactic Velocity Field, the Local Mean Mass Density, and Biased Galaxy Formation
The biased galaxy formation picture accounts for the low apparent mass density derived from clustering dynamics by the assumption that the mass per galaxy is unusually low in the regions of high density where clustering has been studied. It would follow that the mass per galaxy is unusually high where the mass density is low, and, by continuity, that the mass per galaxy is close to the global m...
متن کاملLocally Biased Galaxy Formation and Large Scale Structure
We examine the influence of the morphology-density relation and a wide range of simple models for biased galaxy formation on statistical measures of large scale structure. We contrast the behavior of local biasing models, in which the efficiency of galaxy formation is determined by the density, geometry, or velocity dispersion of the local mass distribution, with that of non-local biasing model...
متن کاملConstraints on the Effects of Locally-biased Galaxy Formation
While it is well-known that “biased galaxy formation” can increase the strength of galaxy clustering, it is less clear whether straightforward biasing schemes can change the shape of the galaxy correlation function on large scales. Here we consider “local” biasing models, in which the galaxy density field δg at a point x is a function of the matter density field δ at that point: δg = f(δ). We c...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملAPM galaxies trace the mass: new evidence from gravitational dynamics
We present two new dynamical tests of the biasing hypothesis. The first is based on the amplitude and the shape of the galaxy-galaxy correlation function, ξg(r), where r is the separation of the galaxy pair. The second test uses the mean relative peculiar velocity for galaxy pairs, v12(r). This quantity is a measure of the rate of growth of clustering and it is related to the two-point correlat...
